What the Koi Fish symbolizes depends upon the region/culture you ask, the number of Koi Fish, and the color of the Koi Fish. That being said, there are generally a few accepted meanings despite these divisions:

  • Accepted internationally, the Koi Fish symbolizes overcoming adversity and the power of purpose in motivating one to persevere through obstacles and challenges in life (aka courage).
  • Often the Koi Fish represents good fortune or luck.
  • Sometimes the Koi can represent prosperity and riches.
  • Bravery, independence, grace, and surpassing expectations have all been mentioned as what the Koi Symbolizes.
  • In Japan the Koi is also a representation of family.
